Beyond the Postcards #30 - When Christmas Comes To Cyprus’s Villages

When Christmas Comes To Cyprus's Villages

We had visited Kalopanayiotis many times before, but our Christmas outing there left a different impression. We came for the festivities and also made time for a walk through the village. It was a familiar place, yet on that occasion, we felt especially welcome.

This winter, nine communities across Cyprus will host Christmas Villages from November 21, 2026, through January 6, 2027. For travelers who associate Cyprus mainly with beaches and summer holidays, the celebrations offer an opportunity to experience the island's village traditions, seasonal food, and rural character at a different time of year.

A Christmas We Remember in Kalopanayiotis

During our visit, the Christmas market stalls were beautifully decorated, and the village was full of people enjoying the celebrations. We tasted delicious traditional food and enjoyed zivania, Cyprus's traditional grape spirit. The mountain weather was cold, but the festive surroundings and the friendliness of the locals made the experience feel cozy and welcoming.

We also spent time walking through the village, appreciating its traditional architecture. For travelers who enjoy old stone houses and narrow village streets, Kalopanayiotis is worth visiting in its own right. Taking that walk made our Christmas outing more rewarding than a visit to the market alone would have been.

What stayed with us was how welcome we felt. Perhaps it was the festive season, perhaps it was the people, or perhaps the combination of both. Whatever the reason, that Christmas visit remains a fond memory.

Nine Villages, Different Settings

The Christmas Villages program features nine communities this season: Agros, Deryneia, Fikardou, Kakopetria, Kalopanayiotis, Kyperounta, Lefkara, Lofou, and Statos–Agios Fotios. Their settings and character differ, from mountain communities to villages in other parts of the island, giving visitors the opportunity to choose according to their interests.

The planned celebrations include decorated stalls selling local products and handicrafts, traditional food, workshops, and cultural activities. Families may enjoy the seasonal entertainment, while couples and travelers interested in village life may prefer combining the festivities with a walk through the village or a meal at a local restaurant.

When choosing among the nine villages, consider the journey as well as the festivities. A longer drive may be worthwhile if you have a full day available, while a village closer to where you are staying might be a better choice for a shorter, more relaxed outing.

Choosing When to Visit Matters

Our Christmas visit to Kalopanayiotis took place on a weekend, and the village was full of visitors. The crowds contributed to the lively atmosphere, but visitors looking for a quieter experience might have preferred a less busy day.

The Christmas Villages will operate from November 21, 2026, through January 6, 2027, inclusive. Until December 20, the program is scheduled primarily for weekends and public holidays, with additional opening dates listed in the official calendar. From December 21 through January 6, the markets will operate daily.

If you prefer fewer people, consider visiting on a weekday during the daily opening period, although the Christmas and New Year holidays can still attract considerable crowds. Check the individual village's program and opening hours before traveling, as activities and schedules may vary.

Remember, too, that mountain villages can be considerably colder than coastal destinations. Bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to spend several hours outdoors. If you would like to taste zivania, make sure someone else is responsible for driving.

Christmas Beyond the Coast

Returning to a place you already know can be just as rewarding as visiting somewhere new. Kalopanayiotis had been part of our travels for years, but our Christmas visit showed us how much the season can influence the experience of a familiar village. We did not need a new destination to come away with a new memory.

If you are planning a winter visit, resist the temptation to treat the nine Christmas Villages as a checklist. You may get more from choosing one village carefully and giving it an afternoon than from trying to see several in a hurry. The pleasure of a Christmas outing should not depend on how many places you manage to visit.

Until next month,

Maria & Chris
