From a small “Artisan fishing fleet” launching from the beach, the fishermen would anchor their boats in the bay to land their catch, bringing in fresh fish for the nearby villages daily.
Now, the famous
harbour of Ayia Napa has stayed loyal to its history, but somehow evolved into
a wonderful traditional harbour to remind us of days gone by, retaining all the
ambience you can handle, yet still respecting it’s history and traditions.
Coexisting perfectly alongside the modern amenities of the world today...
Ayia Napa Harbour is proof of how culture, history, and tourism can get together in harmonious excellence.
During the Ottoman and British empires, the harbour remained small. However, during the rise of tourism, Ayia Napa became a busy holiday resort town, therefore its harbour began to grow. Piers, breakwaters, public walkways, and so on were added.
Nowadays, this charming harbour is the corner-stone of traditional tourism in Ayia Napa, combining “old-world” charm with modern amenities. It’s blend of traditions and modern leisure activities make it a unique thriving hub for local culture, water sports, and tourism combined. What a place to be!
In Greek, Ayia Napa harbour/port is called “Limanaki”.
“Limanaki” = means “small port”
The sandy beach adjacent to the harbour of Ayia Napa is also called “Limanaki” possibly from the original fishermen who used to land their catches there every day. You can enjoy a refreshing dip in the silky smooth cool blue Mediterranean Sea with its crystal-clear waters, or, just cook gently with your favourite factor 20 sunblock under the hot sun.
(Note: “Limanaki beach” is also known as the “Harbour beach” and “Pantachou beach”).
Walking towards the harbour you will pass many souvenir and beachwear shops. So, if you have forgotten anything for your time at the beach, or even your holiday in Cyprus, you will generally be able to find it somewhere in amongst them.
“The picturesque promenade”, lined with elegant statues, scattered park benches, and beautiful palm trees. It’s the perfect place for an evening stroll. Whether you are a couple, or a family with kids, or even a solo traveller, you will most certainly enjoy your walk along the harbour walls.
It’s so beautiful and scenic, especially during the evenings when the colourful lights shine on the calm Mediterranean Sea. All you have to do is sit on one of the benches and admire the view…Small fishing boats, colourful lights, while the air is filled with the aroma of delicious grilled seafood…What a lovely experience! Cypriot culture at its best! Sea views, fishing boats, and delicious Greek-Cypriot food! Yummy… :-)
