Profitis Elias Church (Protaras)…
The first time we visited this small but charming church was with our parents ages ago (time goes by so quickly, huh…? :-) ).
Since then, we’ve been visiting the Prophet Elias Church every time we go to Protaras. It’s a Greek-Christian Orthodox church built on a very beautiful hill where many weddings and christenings take place every year…Be one of them, it’s exquisite…Really…!!

This small but charming church, dedicated to Prophet Elias (Elijah), was built in 1984 on a rocky hilltop overlooking the resort of Protaras.
Although it’s small in size, it makes up for it in stature. The church, being one of the most visited religious landmarks in Protaras, offers both locals and visitors alike, a beautiful place of worship and reflection. Did we mention of course the stunning panoramic views of Protaras and the subsequent coastline...?! :-)
This Greek-Christian Orthodox church was built in the traditional Byzantine style replacing a much older church. It became an important site for pilgrimage, especially on the Prophet Elias’ (Elijah) feast day, which is on the 20th of July every year.
This Byzantine-style church is simple but yet elegant! It was constructed from local stone with its domed roof and arched windows; it reflects the classical Orthodox design. The interior is decorated with frescoes and icons, making this beautiful church a space of serene beauty for worship and contemplation.
The highlight though of Prophet Elias is its location! Visitors must climb over 100 steps to reach the church. However, the effort is rewarded! From the top of the hill where the church stands, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the resort of Protaras, and the Mediterranean Sea.
At night when it’s well illuminated, which makes it even more magical, it stands proud above all else around! Also, during the sunrise and sunset the Prophet Elias Church becomes an awe-inspiring place. The colours settling on the horizon are divine.
For the locals, the church is a beloved religious site, and for the visitors, a site where they can find tranquility, away from the busy bustling resort of Protaras.
Note: The church is a popular spot for photography (e.g. weddings and christenings) because of its extremely romantic setting, and the staggering contrasting backdrops that are ever present, just stunning!
…So, that shuts the door on “The Profitis Elias Church (Protaras)”.
We wish you the best holiday in the exotic resort of Protaras…Come back again soon! :-)
