What do we mean by that…?

In the wider Nicosia district, you will find that there are outstanding monasteries to visit; for instance, The Kykkos monastery and Machairas monastery. These two incredible and very impressive monasteries will leave you in awe…!! :-)

In addition, if you visit the agrotourism villages in the district of Nicosia, you will get a feel for the culture of the islanders that live in the mountain villages continuing to keep the old traditions of the island alive.

Since we live in Nicosia, we should point out that we have visited all the main monasteries and villages in this beautiful district.

So, we have first-hand knowledge of the road trips that are possible, and the best places to stay in amongst the agrotourism villages dotted about the island.

Agrotourism is something we love doing. It’s another kind of adventure that allows you to stay in unique homes in the picturesque traditional villages in the mountains.

Please note: You may prefer a car to visit these traditional and picturesque villages. Although there is a reliable bus service available all the way up to Troodos.

If you don’t have time to visit all of the villages that you want to, then try to visit at least Kakopetria, Pedoulas, Farmakas, Alona, and Kalopanayiotis. The routes to get to these beautiful villages are magnificent, and breathtaking…!! You won’t regret it…!! :-)

Things to Do in Nicosia: Explore the Monasteries in the Nicosia District

Our two favourite monasteries that we love to visit in the Nicosia district are...

the Kykkos monastery and
the Machairas monastery

They are both unique and picturesque. If you decide to visit Kykkos, don’t forget to also allow the time to visit the Throni of Panayia, which is about 2 minutes drive away from the Kykkos monastery by car. You’ll love it in Throni, since it was built on a mountain peak overlooking the green mountains. What a stunning scenery…!!

The Kykkos and Machairas monasteries are located high up in the mountains of the island. So, you may prefer to hire a car to get there (although there is a reliable bus service too). Also, please note that the routes to get to these two monasteries are spectacularly impressive…!! :-)
